Police Involved Shooting

Brian Teepell/USPA 24 News - An individual is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot by an RCMP officer in Eastern Passage, N.S., on Tuesday afternoon.

The RCMP was responding to a report of an assault at a residence on Cedar Lane at 1:50 p.m. when the shooting took place.

In an afternoon media statement the RCMP explained; “During the RCMP response, a member discharged their firearm; a person sustained life-threatening injuries consistent with a gun shot wound and was transported to hospital. "No one else was injured"

The shooting has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team, which is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has the authority to investigate all incidents involving death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or other matters of public interest stemming from the actions of police officers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This mandate includes incidents occurring on or off duty to eliminate actual or perceived bias in police investigations of fellow officers. Following each investigation, the SiRT Director must decide whether the police officer’s actions warrant criminal charges. If no charges are justified, the Director releases a public summary detailing the reasoning behind this decision, including the information required by regulation. Public summaries are designed to furnish the public with adequate information to comprehend the Director’s rationale and findings.
